Mr. Thomas R. Sharp Jr., President
ThermaCote, Inc.
1369 Herrington Road
Lawrenceville, GA 80044

Dear Mr. Sharp:
Hope this letter finds you and your ThermaCote family in the best of health. Habitat for Humanity Yuma would like to thank you for your company’s contribution to our new build in Wellton, Arizona.

The fact that Habitat for Humanity of Yuma was selected as the beneficiary of your product is outstanding. Families that will move into these homes will have an added tool in managing their utility cost. By reducing the overall utility expenditure, the savings realized by the families will help improve their quality of life. The summers in the Arizona desert can be very brutal with temperatures exceeding one hundred and ten degrees Fahrenheit. ThermaCote product will definitely make a huge impact in energy savings during the summer months.

The fact that ThermaCote would take it upon itself to provide assistance to the less fortunate is a sign of a very special company with strong leadership. To have the awareness that providing assistance is a positive influence on the outcome of our communities is again a strong indicator on your commitment to helping the less fortunate.

Tommy, ThermaCote will always have a special place in our heart and your contribution to our new homes is very much appreciated by all of us.

Respectfully,

KEY MOTORSPORTS NEWS-FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mooresville, NC (August 29, 2011) Josh Wise will pilot the No. 40 Key Motorsports prepared Chevrolet in Saturday’s 300-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway with primary sponsorship from ThermaCote, Inc., an Atlanta area manufacturer of high performance sealants used in homes, classrooms, hotels and all types of buildings.

“ThermaCote, Inc. is fired up at the opportunity to sponsor and support the Key Motorsports #40 car at the Nationwide Series Great Clips 300,” stated Thomas R. Sharp, Jr., President of ThermaCote, Inc. “We’ve got all of Atlanta cheering for Josh and the #40 ThermaCote® Chevy!”

Wise, who drove the No.40 Chevrolet at Watkins Glen and Montreal the past two weeks, is looking forward to returning to the 1.5-mile high-banked superspeedway where he recorded an 11th-place finish in the 2010 edition of this event.

“I like running Atlanta, it is super fast and there is a lot of room to race,” offered Wise. “We have a good chemistry with Gary Showalter (Key Motorsports crew chief) and the whole No. 40 team. Gary is very knowledgeable with these cars and I am looking forward to a good run in the ThermaCote® Chevrolet in Saturday’s race.”

Showalter is equally as pleased with the way everything worked out to bring Wise and ThermaCote® together for Atlanta this weekend.

“We have everything we need for a good showing in Atlanta,” shared Showalter. “Josh is a level-headed driver with a lot of potential and we are bringing our best to this race. We appreciate the support of ThermaCote® at Atlanta and want a good result for them.”

While the No. 40 ThermaCote® Chevrolet remains the flagship of the Key Motorsports fleet, team owner Curtis Key recently expanded his operation to four Nationwide Series teams which has opened up opportunities for many during a slow economy.

“Key Motorsports is proud to represent ThermaCote®” said Key. “It is a quality product made right here in the United States by a quality company and we are thankful for their support. Josh, Gary and the Key Motorsports team are prepared to get the job done this weekend.”

ESPN2 will broadcast Saturday’s 300-mile NASCAR Nationwide Series race live from Atlanta Motor Speedway with coverage beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Global Wall Coverings Market to Reach US $26 Billion by 2015, According to a New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on wall coverings market. The global market for wall coverings is forecast to reach US$26 billion by the year 2015, boosted by the recovering world economy and the consequent activity in the residential construction sector. Burgeoning demand for remodeling and refurbishing homes, particularly in emerging economies including Asia-Pacific and Latin America will provide the required impetus to the global wallpaper, wall tiles and interior paints markets.

The impact of the global economic downturn on the construction industry brought about new market dynamics and changes in consumer preferences. In 2009, the market for wall coverings was negatively impacted due to reasons such as worldwide recession, increased competition among paint and coating manufacturers and the vulnerable non-residential construction market. The residential remodeling segment emerged as a key niche market for wall coverings, where in times of scarce finances, consumers are increasingly looking towards remodeling interiors instead of purchasing new houses. In the foreseeable future, anticipated recovery in the residential construction sector is expected to drive demand for wall coverings, specifically by large markets such as the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific. With new product developments and market turnaround in the residential construction activity, the demand for wallpapers and decorative tiles is also projected to expand. In particular, the wallpaper market is witnessing new trends such as introduction of wallpaper cutouts, removable wallpapers, mold-resistant and low-emission wallpapers. Addition of these features is expected to make wallpapers more user and environment friendly, and increase the segment’s market share.

New technologies such as digital printing, and new patterns such as faux finishes were responsible for the segment growth, which had showed dwindling revenues for the past decade or so. Designer names determine the success of products in the wallpaper market. Purchases are driven by the name of the designer and not by brands. In this aspect, wallpaper industry parallels fashion-designing industry. Decorative tiles are finding increasing applications in both non-residential and residential markets, new constructions and home re-modeling, repairs and renovations. While wall panels and decorative tiles would be more benefited, paints would continue to dominate wallpapers segment in terms of size, due to sustained consumer confidence in paints.

China is one of the major producers of building materials and ranks first in the production of ceramic tiles on a global level with Shanghai as one of the largest commercial centers for production of building materials. The country represents huge demand for wall covering products such as mosaic tiles, concrete blocks for outer wall material, roof tiles, coatings, paints, and the like. With huge untapped potential, India is an enticing market for wall covering manufacturers. India’s entry into the WTO has opened up the wallpaper market to foreign manufacturers. Demand for ceramic wall tiles is expected to show high growth in the region. Latin America displays a positive note with booming markets such as Brazil and Chile boding bright prospects for architectural coatings.

Europe and Asia-Pacific constitute two of the largest regional markets, as stated by the new market research report on Wall Coverings. In terms of most promising growth potential, Asia-Pacific, backed by China, India, Indonesia, Thailand and others is the clear winner, and forecast to expand at a CAGR of more than 3.0% through 2015.

The Interior Paints segment continues to hold sway as the single largest market. However, with changing consumer preferences, Wallpaper is forecast to make a comeback after years of suspended activity and profits, and register the fastest CAGR for the period 2007–2015. Hitherto untapped regions such as Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Middle East, which have traditionally been strong markets for interior paints, display huge potential for future growth and expansion of wallpapers segment.

Key market participants profiled in the report include Crossville, Inc, Dal-Tile Corporation, Emilceramica S.p.A, Grupo Porcelanite S.A., Internacional de Ceramica S.A. de C.V., Johnson Tiles, Marazzi Group SpA, Brewster Wall coverings Company, F. Schumacher & Company, Johns Manville, Omnova Solutions Inc., Pacific Wallcoverings Limited, Seabrook Wall coverings Inc., The Designtex Group, Omega National Products, The Sherwin-Williams Company and Duron Paints & Wall Coverings.

The research report titled “Wall Coverings: A Global Strategic Business Report” announced by Global Industry Analysts Inc., provides a comprehensive review of market overview, issues & trends, product overview, recent industry activity, product innovations and profiles of market players worldwide. Analysis and overview is presented for major geographic markets such as US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Latin America. Market analytics are provided in terms of value (US$) for product segments including Wallpaper, Interior Paint, Wall Tiles and Wall Panels. The study also presents historic data for an insight into market evolution over the period 2000 through 2006.

White roofs to fight global warming

U.S. energy secretary Chu backs a novel idea: to whitewash roofs and highways. It could save lots of money and highlights an increasingly proactive agency.

ThermaCote® News (ThermaCote.Com) – NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — America should attack global warming by … painting rooftops and road surfaces white.

Seriously. No kidding.

Among those promoting the idea is Energy Secretary Steven Chu, a big-thinking physicist who has a bully pulpit and influence over billions in research and stimulus funds.

Chu spoke about the idea at a London conference last year while Congress was busy hashing out a complex, 1,400-page bill to cut greenhouse gases.

Whitening the world’s roofs and roads would have the same effect on global warming as removing all the world’s cars for 11 years, he said.

“So I’d like to appeal to all people — we should convert to white limousines,” he said.

Chu was joking about the limousines, of course. But his proposal for addressing climate change is genuine.

It sounds kooky, but environmentalists say the idea is legit.

They say recent research shows it’s even more beneficial than previously thought. Moreover the Energy Department, flush with $38 billion in stimulus money, is in a position to make it happen.

Chu’s comments were based on recent research from Arthur Rosenfeld, a former colleague of Chu’s at the Energy Department’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Chu’s all cars for 11 years number is meant to be illustrative — no one really expects all roofs and all roads will be painted white.

But for new projects and some retrofits, it does make sense.

A white roof has three benefits:

It keeps buildings cooler, reducing the amount of energy required for air conditioning.

It reduces the so-call “heat island” effect, the heating up of entire urban areas which then causes other buildings in the vicinity to heat up, whether they are in direct contact with the sun or not.

A white roof or road will actually reflect the sun’s rays back into space, keeping the atmosphere cooler.

“This is a great idea,” said Lane Burt, an energy policy analyst at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “We always knew it was good, and now we’re just starting to realize it’s even better than we previously thought.”

The Associated General Contractors of America, while saying costs for white roofs vary greatly, recommends them as one energy-efficient upgrade.

The Energy Department said a white roof can knock 10% to 20% off a building’s electric bill. To that end, it is encouraging anyone replacing or building a roof to take advantage of $2 billion in tax credits available under the stimulus plan.

A spokesman said the department is looking to use more of its stimulus money to promote “cool roofs,” which don’t have to be white and could include silver reflective paint or even rooftop gardens.

As for white roads, the spokesman said the department isn’t actively promoting them, but said an effort may be made to educate communities on the benefits of using cement-colored asphalt.

The Energy Department’s recent push into innovative conservation measures and renewable energy research is largely credited to its current head.

Chu, with a Nobel Prize to his name, is former head of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a strong advocate of renewable energy and conservation.

This is a marked contrast from previous energy secretaries, who often came from business or political backgrounds and had little experience in the energy industry itself, let alone the scientific community that many now hope will help the country move away from fossil fuels. President Reagan’s first energy secretary tried hard to abolish his own department.

As cost becomes more competitive, hotels are turning to low-VOC paints. Ron Word

W
hen renovating or building a new hotel, contractors should consider using paints with low volatile compounds, or low-VOC paints.

These eco-friendly paints, from a variety of manufacturers, make sense for a number of reasons. One of the biggest is they have low odors, meaning they won’t drive away your guests complaining of paint fumes. They meet standards for green building certifications and good air quality equals a better sleep, which equals a better guest experience.

Steve Revnew, vice president of product development for Sherwin-Williams at its Cleveland headquarters, answered questions about these paints, particularly their durability, costs and covering ability.

Hotel Interactive: Do low VOC paints cover as well as traditional paints?

Steve Revnew: Yes, as the demand for green building practices continues to grow and the standards for green building certifications continue to grow more stringent, VOC-compliance of a coating has become an important characteristic of a “good quality” paint. As far as comparison to traditional paints, low-VOC paints can perform on par or better than non-VOC compliant product as it relates to hiding and longer-lasting performance. These qualities translate to fewer coats needed to achieve a durable surface, which minimizes the frequency of costly repaints, and makes the investment in these produces beneficial for both contractor and customer.

HI: Are they more expensive?

SR: Actually, VOC-complaint produces do not come at a high cost. In fact, even with the high-quality surfaces these coatings produce, the costs of these paints is in the same range as other premium coatings on the market today, making them affordable for contractors and a cost-effective option for customers even amidst tough economic times.

HI: Do they last as long as traditional paints?

SR: Yes, in fact, recent technological advances in environmentally preferred coatings have brought a new generation of performance-rich interior products to the market that offers even longer-lasting durability and high-end aesthetics, along with application ease. Some environmentally responsible paints also contain antimicrobial properties that resist mildew, bacteria, and other microbes to help maintain a fresh appearance longer. In addition, these coatings prevent stains from penetrating better than ceramic coatings on the market; resist burnish marks; and withstand repeated washings and visible paint wear, making them perfect for high-traffic areas and facility environments.

What does 2011 hold for China, US?

China, now a leader in everything from cleantech investment to carbon emissions, can expect to see its star keep rising in 2011. However, the business atmosphere there promises to show much more volatility in the coming year … with uncertain implications for outside investors.

Companies ranging from Apple to Siemens, from IBM to Wal-Mart, have made huge investments in China in recent years, spending on everything from shiny new factories to whole smart-city projects. Multinationals haven’t yet shown any slowdown in their appetites for Chinese business ventures, but 2011 could be the year that causes some to reconsider future strategies.

That’s because China’s economy, while still charging ahead, faces some challenges that can be ignored or masked for only so long. The government has already raised interest rates twice since October to counteract growing inflation, which is making everything from food to rent more expensive for its citizens. Prices have been accelerating especially fast in real estate, leading many to predict that China — like the US before it — will soon see the bursting of its housing bubble.

With far more young and well-educated college graduates than it has high-paying jobs for, China could also see growing levels of social unrest.

For now, however, China still holds a winning hand of cards, particularly in the areas of green technology and sustainability. There is, for example, its near-total control of the world’s supply of rare-earth elements, materials that are vital for producing technologies from wind turbines to electric-car batteries. It also enjoys the top spot in renewable energy, both in terms of domestic production and in production of wind turbines and solar panels for export. And considering the austerity and debt-reduction measures being enacted in both Europe and the US, that position for China isn’t likely to change in 2011.

The US, in particular, faces a difficult year ahead. Despite President Barack Obama’s calls to rejuvenate the US economy with green jobs and clean technology, money for such goals will become increasingly tight. Much of the billions provided under the nation’s economic stimulus bill will run out this coming year, and the incoming US Congress features a new class of Tea Party members, climate-change-deniers and small-government proponents unlikely to put a value on further investments in sustainability. If anything, look for a steady stream of proposals to roll back green jobs spending, environmental regulations and investments in energy and technology research and development.

All things considered, it appears that China — and not Europe or the US — will continue holding the green leadership role as we enter 2011.

We can thank China, offshore wind and European solar rooftops for a record $243 billion of global investment into clean power — including funding mechanisms like the public markets, private investment, government funding, asset financing and corporate spending — according to new figures out from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. That is a whole lot of money, and a good reason for greentech companies and entrepreneurs to remain optimistic despite a potential back off from greentech VCs in Silicon Valley.

In fact, that $243 billion total is over 30 times what greentech VCs spent in 2010 by themselves, and according to the Cleantech Group venture capitalists invested about $7.8 billion into 715 deals over the same time period. Which begs the question, does green technology really need the VC community’s investment all that much?

Well, a big chunk of the Bloomberg New Energy Finance total is from asset financing, which provides money for building out mostly utility-scale clean power infrastructure. VCs don’t have those type of funds, nor the desire to do that type of investing. Likewise government funding, and corporations, are also providing a sizable amount of money right now for basic greentech R&D, and VCs mostly don’t want to be in that game either.

But where VCs do excel historically (though current greentech investing hasn’t proven this out yet) is by finding disruptive startups that can be game changers — ie. the long sought-after Google of greentech. Until there’s a good greentech distruptor candidate to point to, that type of investing is hard to quantify.

In the meantime, here’s a break down of the different types of clean power funding in Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s global figures for 2010:

Global distributed clean power, which is largely rooftop solar, generated $59.6 billion in investment.

Clean power investment in China jumped to $51.1 billion.

Global government R&D spending hit $21 billion.

Corporate clean energy R&D spending reached $14.4 billion.

Public market investments for clean power generated $17.4 billion, which was below the 2007 public market figure of $24.6 billion.

Asset financing, which is mostly for utility‐scale wind, solar and biofuel projects, generated $127.8 billion.
